MATH WILL GUIDE THE VEHICLES
Vehicle routing will become more functional via mathematical formulas. Thanks to the project developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gözde Yazgı Tütüncü, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of Mathematics, the service, which is used for providing goods for many customers from several depots, will become more cost-efficient, faster, and eco-friendly. TUBITAK funded project will initially be tested for EDAK Ecza Koop vehicles.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tütüncü, who gave information about the project, said that vehicle routing studies resulted in major loss of costs and time for companies. Tütüncü stated the following:
“Goods located at different depots are being delivered to many customers at different locations. This puts such a heavy burden on the companies. Customer relations are also important. There is also user initiative in the software we developed together with my Ph.D. student Fatih Kocatürk, which is based on algorithms. The system aims to find optimal routes for a fleet of vehicles delivering to more customers. The user can follow the distribution network and direct the service. EDAK Ecza Koop is supporting our TUBITAK Project by sharing valuable data with us.”
‘Both Economic and Ecologic Friendly’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tütüncü stated that as an outcome of their project which was funded 116 thousand 870TL by TUBITAK, a “Decision Support System” that worked with algorithms which involved many advanced mathematical approaches, would be developed. “We will be completing our project in two years. We believe that in the event of being used by companies with large and complex supply networks, it will have economic benefits, and by minimizing carbon monoxide oscillation, it will have ecologic benefits,” stated Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tütüncü.
‘Expectation of the Sector’
The project collaborator Emre Bacanak, Head of EDAK Ecza Koop, stated that IUE academicians were working on an important project to find an answer to a significant demand. He said, “It is not easy to come up with optimal routes which may frequently change. The fact that academicians and students of Izmir University of Economics generating science in order to meet the demands of the industry was something we’ve always dreamed about.”
