Today, as the Department of Mathematics at İzmir University of Economics, we celebrated World Statistics Day with a meaningful event.
Hosted by our esteemed faculty member Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, the event began with an exploration of the history of statistics, followed by a presentation from our invited speaker Prof. Dr. Ayşe Sevtap Kestel (METU Institute of Applied Mathematics, Head of the Department of Actuarial Sciences), who addressed the financial dimensions of major disasters such as earthquakes and floods. She outlined a comprehensive framework spanning insurance systems, reinsurance types, catastrophe bonds (CatBonds), and stochastic modeling. The study, in which loss behavior was modeled using Geometric Brownian Motion, was also applied to real-world data from TRAMER traffic insurance records — a powerful reminder of mathematics’ role in making sense of great risks.
We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed, especially our distinguished speakers and all those who attended.
As Izmir University of Economics transforms into a world-class university, it also raises successful young people with global competence.
