AN IMPORTANT COOPERATION IN BIOMATHEMATICS FIELD FROM IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

 

Illinois State University Biomathematics Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Olcay Akman visited Izmir University of Economics in the scope of TÜBİTAK Scientist Support Program. Izmir University of Economics Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu said that a protocol was signed between Illinois State University and Izmir University of Economics in the framework of joint agreements and student and lecturer exchange.  

 

Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu that made the openning speech of Biomathematics Research Workshop that took place on April 20-25 stated that the fastest developments in interdisciplinary studies were about biomathematics and said, "We signed a protocol between Department of Mathematics and Illinois State University in the framework of joint agreements and student and lecturer exchange. We cordially support the studies of the lecturers in this field."

 

Later, the sessions started. Assoc. Prof. Olcay Akman from Illinois State University made a presentation entitled "Uses of Kohonen Self-Organizing Feature Maps in Ecology". The workshop continued with Ünal Ufuktepe - Belma Alkan- Buket Yılmaz's "Petri Nets and Biomathematics", Durmuş Özdemir's "Genetic Algorithms Based Multivariate Approaches to Biomathematics" from Izmir Institute of Technology, Jens Allmer's "Bioinformatics: Peptide Identification" from Izmir University of Economics, and Ahmet Yıldırım's "Solution of The Epidemic  Model by Variational Iteration Method" from Ege University. Students and lecturers from Ege University, Dokuz Eylül University and Izmir Institute of Technology attended the workshop.

 

 

 

In the last day of the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Olcay Akman made a speech about "The Applications of Genetic Algorithms in Biology". Students and lecturers from different departments attended the speech.  After the seminar, long discussions are made on the subject.

 

 

After the visit it is decided that a graduate student in Izmir University of Economics Department of Mathematics in 2008-2009 academic year to be given a scholarship to go to study at Illinois State University for one year to study on biomathematics and graduate with a double diploma.
